Bay and Bow Windows

Overview

Although they’re often confused with one another because they both protrude from the house, bay and bow windows in Ottawa are not the same.

Letting in the Light

A bay window is usually made of three or four windows projecting from the house at angles of 30, 45, or 90 degrees, with the middle section parallel to the exterior wall of the house. A bow window usually has four or five sections shaped in a graceful curve, which is the bow. The sections of each type may be fixed, operable, or a combination of the two. Bay and bow windows are typically rather heavy and need to be well supported. Both types allow more light into the home while offering wider views of the outside world than an ordinary window.
